The commercial heart on the highest ground

Top Ryde is the centre of Ryde rather than a suburb of its own: the shopping centre at the Devlin Street and Blaxland Road intersection, the council offices and library, and the streets immediately around them. The name is literal. This is the top of the hill, around 59 metres above the Parramatta River, and the original Top Ryde shopping centre on this site was only the second of its type built in Australia.

Everything here drains downhill, in all directions.

Mixed buildings, mixed roofs

Within a short walk of that corner you have detached brick houses under terracotta, older red-brick flats with low-pitch and near-flat roof sections, and newer apartment buildings. Three different roofing conversations.

• Houses. Original terracotta with failed bedding and pointing under the capping, rusted valley trays, and flashings lifted at chimneys and parapet walls.
• Walk-up flats. Box gutters behind parapets, internal downpipes and sumps. There is no spare capacity in a box gutter, so a blocked outlet puts water inside the roof line rather than over the edge, and overflow provision is often absent.
• Newer apartment buildings. Membrane and metal deck areas with plant penetrations, where the detailing at upstands and penetrations decides everything.

Because the ground falls away from this high point, downpipe discharge and gutter capacity come up repeatedly. A roof that drains to two corners on a falling block is a drainage design question, not a cleaning question.
