The highest ground in the district
At roughly 80 metres, Denistone East is the high point of this part of Sydney — higher than Top Ryde, higher than Denistone itself. Blaxland Road runs through it, Denistone East Public School has been on its site since 1950, and the suburb is bounded by Eastwood, Denistone, Ryde and West Ryde. From here the land drops away in every direction, toward the Parramatta River on one side and the Lane Cove catchment on the other.
Height does not shelter a roof. It exposes it.
Wind, runoff and old mortar
Three things follow from sitting on the top.
Exposure. Ridge and hip capping on the high, open roofs takes more weather than the same capping two streets downhill. Cracked pointing and drummy bedding show up earlier, and once water is getting under the caps it has the whole length of a batten to travel before it appears on a ceiling.
Runoff concentration. Steep streets mean steep blocks, and a roof pitched down a falling block delivers its water to one or two low corners. The gutter that overflows at the same spot every storm is almost never dirty — it is undersized, or has lost its fall, or is feeding a downpipe that cannot take the volume.
Roof age. The housing is substantially post-war brick, so the tile roofs are in the window where the original bedding has reached its end and the first-generation valley trays have rusted from underneath.
The inspection is free
Someone gets on the roof where it is safe, checks the capping, valleys and flashings, looks in the ceiling space, photographs it, and gives you a written itemised quote. No charge and no obligation. Call (02) 9100 0199.
Common jobs: roof repairs, tile roof restoration and gutter repairs or replacement sized for a sloping block.
