Bushland and water on almost every side

East Ryde is a small suburb on a ridge above the western bank of the Lane Cove River, surrounded by bushland and water on all but one side. Its edges meet Buffalo Creek, Strangers Creek and Kitty's Creek, with mangroves along the river. Brereton Park sits between Melba Drive, Bronhill Avenue and Pittwater Road, Buffalo Creek Reserve is just off Pittwater Road, and Heatley Reserve sits beside the local shops.

Most of the housing came from the Dress Circle Estate, opened in 1960 with covenants limiting it to single dwellings on blocks of roughly 650 square metres. The streets named after stage and screen performers — Melba Drive, Bronhill Avenue, Moncrieff Drive — are that subdivision. Along the riverside end of Pittwater Road there are larger modern houses.

The two local problems

Leaf load, constantly. Being ringed by bush means valleys and gutters fill faster here than almost anywhere else in the district. Packed valleys hold water above the tray, and the tray rusts from underneath where nobody looks.

Runoff on a ridge. Streets fall away sharply toward the creeks and the river. Roof planes on sloping blocks deliver their water to one or two low corners, and gutters and downpipes sized decades ago overflow at the same point every storm. Where the land falls away from the road, the discharge arrangement matters — the City of Ryde stormwater provisions work from gravity-fed drainage to the low point of the site, with charged systems and inter-allotment easements for blocks that cannot reach the street.

Roofs from the early 1960s estate are now at the age where the bedding under the capping has let go and the original valley iron is finished.
