North Ryde was farmland until after the Second World War, when state-subdivided land went into war service homes and public housing through the 1950s and 60s. That is still the backbone of the suburb, and it means a very consistent roof age: tile roofs that are now sixty to seventy-five years old, laid on light framing with minimal sarking.

The other defining feature is bushland. Wallumatta Nature Reserve at the Twin Road and Cressy Road corner preserves a remnant of Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest, the Field of Mars Reserve sits next to Lane Cove National Park, and the suburb runs down to the Lane Cove River itself. Combine that with sixty-year-old bedding mortar and the usual North Ryde job is a set: clear and replace the valleys, rebed and repoint the ridge and hip capping, replace the tiles that have broken, and fit leaf guard that is actually matched to eucalypt litter rather than generic mesh.

Towards the Lachlan's Line and former Channel 10 sites there are newer apartment buildings, which are a low-pitch and membrane proposition rather than a tile one.
