Ryde sits at about 59 metres on the ridge above the Parramatta River, which is how the shops at the Devlin Street and Blaxland Road corner came to be called Top Ryde in the first place. Ryde Park sits between Blaxland Road and Princes Street, Santa Rosa Park runs down toward Bridge Road, and Gannan Park occupies an old quarry and brickworks site. Addington and Willandra on Victoria Road are reminders of how long this ground has been built on.

What we are called out for

Two very different buildings dominate. The brick houses carry original or early terracotta, and the faults are predictable: cracked pointing and drummy bedding under the ridge and hip capping, a rusted valley tray under the tiles, and a flashing that has lifted at a chimney. The other half of the suburb is apartments — at the 2021 census around 55 per cent of occupied dwellings in Ryde were flats — including the 1960s and 70s red-brick walk-ups with low-pitch roof sections, parapets and box gutters that have very little spare capacity when an outlet blocks.

On a block that falls away from the street, the third fault is drainage. Gutters that cope for most of the year overflow at one low corner in a real downpour, and the water goes behind the fascia.
