Between Morrisons Bay and Kissing Point
Putney occupies the river side of the district, on the northern bank of the Parramatta River with Morrisons Bay, Glades Bay and Kissing Point Bay around it. Cleves Park carries a memorial plaque, St Chad's on Delange Road dates from 1912, there is a Spanish Mission house on Douglas Street, and Pellisier Road was the site of the old Slazengers shipyard. Two streets, Beach and Kemp, are named after world rowing champions. The Mortlake cable ferry — the last surviving punt in metropolitan Sydney, running since 1928 — crosses from the end of the peninsula, and the Kissing Point wharf runs ferries to Circular Quay.
Slope plus salt
Putney has the two coastal-adjacent variables working together.
The fall to the water. Blocks drop away toward the bays, which concentrates roof runoff into one or two low corners. Gutters and downpipes sized a long time ago overflow at the same point every storm, and on a falling block the overflow has somewhere to go — behind the fascia, down a wall cavity, into the ceiling. Where a block cannot drain to the street by gravity, the discharge arrangement becomes part of the job, and the City of Ryde stormwater provisions are built around gravity-fed drainage to the low point of the site.
Salt in the air. Air off the river is corrosive to the metal parts of a roof long before it troubles the tiles or sheeting. Fasteners, flashings, valley trays and gutters are the first casualties, and anything replaced close to the water should be specified for that exposure rather than fitted as standard.
On the older houses there is the usual inter-war terracotta story on top of all of that: failed bedding and cracked pointing under the capping, valley iron rusted from underneath.
