One suburb, two councils

Gladesville sits across the boundary: part of it is City of Ryde, part is the Municipality of Hunters Hill. The Victoria Road strip is the commercial spine, with the Gladesville Shopping Village on it. Banjo Paterson Park on Punt Road holds Rockend, the c.1850 cottage where the poet lived as a young man, and The Priory dates from the late 1840s. The Gladesville Hospital site began life in 1838 as the Tarban Creek asylum, the first purpose-built asylum in New South Wales. Looking Glass Bay sits on the river edge, and the Gladesville Bridge, itself on the State Heritage Register, takes Victoria Road across the water.

Three roofing propositions in one postcode

Older tiled houses. Victorian and Federation-era survivors plus a great deal of inter-war and post-war brick, with the usual failed bedding and cracked pointing under ridge and hip capping, and valley trays rusted from underneath.

Red-brick walk-up flats. Dwellings here split fairly evenly between separate houses and semi-detached or unit stock, and the older unit blocks bring low-pitch roof sections, parapets, box gutters and internal downpipes — which fail inside the building rather than over the edge.

Heritage controls. The City of Ryde LEP added a Tyrell Street heritage conservation area at Gladesville in late 2020. On the Hunters Hill side of the suburb the controls are tighter again: complying development is not available inside a conservation area, and council issues heritage exemption letters only for genuinely minor work. The practical consequence is that a change of roof material or appearance needs checking first, while repairing what is there usually does not.
